Do You Need a National Insurance Number as an International Student in Scotland?

Welcome to Scotland! If you’ve just arrived to study here as an international student, you might be wondering whether you need a National Insurance (NI) number.

This guide will help you understand when and why you need one, and how to apply for it.

Do You Need a National Insurance Number?

If you plan to work while studying in the UK, you’ll need a National Insurance number. This unique combination of numbers and letters confirms that you’re legally allowed to work in the UK. However, if you don’t intend to work, you won’t need an NI number until you decide to start working.

How to Apply for a National Insurance Number

You can only apply for an NI number if you’re already in the UK. The good news is that you can start working before your NI number arrives, as long as you can prove you have the right to work in the UK.

Applying for an NI number typically takes less than four weeks, but in some cases, it can take up to 16 weeks.

Steps to Apply

The easiest way to apply for your NI number is through the official UK government website. During the application process, you’ll need to provide the following details:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • UK address (including postcode)
  • Date of arrival in the UK
  • Current employment status

Additionally, you’ll need to prove your identity, so have your passport and, if available, your BRP ready.
